Define the job
Begin with the building, not the beam
Record what is above and below the proposed opening. Plans, photographs and a review of previous alterations help establish which parts of the building may rely on the wall. The information may still need an inspection or opening-up before a structural conclusion is possible.
Understand the permanent supports
The replacement member is part of a load path. Its bearings, any columns or connections and the structure below need consideration. A beam size copied from a different project does not address those relationships.
Separate design from the construction sequence
Agree who designs the temporary support and how the contractor will sequence the work. Temporary works are a distinct responsibility; a photograph of props on another site is not a usable method statement.
Make a complete enquiry
Send existing and proposed plans, the intended opening width, photographs and information about the floors and roof above. Explain whether you are exploring options or already have a contractor and programme.
