Define the job
Set a clear brief
A concern about a crack, a proposed wall removal and a review of roof movement are different inspection tasks. Describe the issue, its history and the decision you need to make.
Provide context
Photographs showing both the detail and the wider area are helpful. Share previous reports, alteration drawings and any record of changes over time. Do not cover or disturb a defect solely to prepare for an inspection.
Understand what is visible
An inspection may be limited by access, finishes or concealed construction. A report should identify those limits and distinguish observations from matters requiring further investigation.
Follow the recommended investigation
Monitoring, opening-up or specialist testing may be needed before a design or conclusion is possible. If there is an immediate safety concern, keep people away and seek appropriate urgent assistance.
